Education Beyond Academia: Importance of Soft Skills in Employability

Vismitha Kudva and I, jointly presented this paper in "National Conference on Quality Enhancement in Higher Education: Issues and Concerns" held at NSAM College, Nitte sponsored by NAAC. Please feel free to share your opinions.

Despite its vast network India has failed to create a world-class higher education system. According to the academic ranking of the world universities for 2005, India had just two universities in the top 500, while Japan had thirty-four, China eighteen, South Korea seven, and Brazil four. McKinsey estimates that only about 10 per cent of the Indian students with degrees in arts and humanities and 25 per cent of engineering graduates are globally competitive. Twelve per cent of the country’s 41 million unemployed have either graduate or post-graduate degrees, pointing to the serious failure of the country’s higher education system. Clearly, outside a few islands of excellence, our higher education system has failed to produce quality institutions that can nurture the creative, intellectual leaders we require for sustainable growth.
“You can give lifetime employability by training people, by making them adaptable, making them mobile to go other places to do other things. But you can’t guarantee life time employment.”—Jack Welch. In the new economy of rapid technological change and increasing business complexity, organizations are striving for developing quality human capital. Soft Skills can provide the path towards this goal. Soft skills are very important to enhance employability. Soft skills need to be enhanced in students to make them competent enough to meet the demands of the current job market. There should be an integrated approach from all the stakeholders such as faculty, students, educational institutions and the industry to bring awareness about soft skills among the students and promote the same for enhancing employability.
 What are Soft Skills?
Soft skills is a sociological term relating to a person's "EQ" (Emotional Intelligence Quotient), the cluster of personality traits, social graces, communication, language, personal habits, friendliness, and optimism that characterize relationships with other people. Soft skills complement hard skills (part of a person's IQ), which are the occupational requirements of a job and many other activities. (Source: Wikipedia2011). Soft skills are very essential at every level of the organization. The soft skills can be listed as below:
  • -          Communication Skills
  • -          Self Management
  • -          Goal Setting and Time Management Skills
  • -          Critical and Structured thinking
  • -          Interpersonal Skills
  • -          Problem Solving and Think Out of the Box Skills
  • -          Teamwork
  • -          Empathy, Ethics and Etiquettes
  • -          Cultural Sensitivity
  • -          Conflict Management
  • -          Project and Business Management
  • -          Integrity and Honesty

How to acquire Soft Skills?
There are 2 methods of acquiring the soft skills – one, through formal classroom training and secondly, self learning through books and web based learning materials.
A pleasant way of acquiring soft skills is frequent socializing with friends, relatives, colleagues and other members of the society. Soft skill cannot be acquired by reading books. They are acquired by experimenting them on self. The best way to improve your communication skill is by communicating frequently. Remember? To improve the handwriting teachers used to make us copy books for pages together daily.

Role of Soft Skills in increasing employability:
In the midst of last decade, the corporate giants observed that there have been several skills gaps in graduates and demands of the industry. Many companies took proactive measures to make the graduates industry ready and employable. The companies have realized the need for industry-academia relationship to meet the demand for quality man power.
The question that raises here is if the Soft Skills can enhance the employability of the graduates, then shouldn’t that be a part of curriculum? If so why hasn’t that been a part of the curriculum till now?

How can Soft skills be the part of the curriculum?
  • -          Facilitating concepts and practice/methods of group dynamics
  • -          Interactive training/teaching concepts and methods/techniques
  • -          Interdisciplinary studies (Choice Base Credit System)
  • -          Leadership Roles
  • -          Knowledge Sharing and Management
  • -          Team Building Activities
  • -          Team Skills – Team Building, Team Management
  • -          Negotiation and Conflict Management
  • -          Interpersonal and Communication Skills

How can this curriculum be modulated?
  • -          Formal lectures covering the theoretical aspects with live examples to facilitate the clarity of the concept
  • -          Adopting Games and Exercises
  • -          Role Plays showing adaptability of the Soft Skills in real life scenarios
  • -          Group Discussions
  • -          Audio and Video Aids to substantiate the importance of soft skills in employment. For eg: Fish Philosophy Video clips.
  • -          Exercises given as home assignment.
  • -          Adopting the Pre and Post Assessment tool in the form of Questionnaire which can reveal the state of mind prior to training and impact of the training.

There are 5 enemies of a healthy lifestyle which have a direct impact on the employability of a person. They are:
1.      Poor Sense of Self
2.      Anxiety
3.      Embarrassment
4.      Ignorance
5.      Denial
Presence of any one of these factors in a person’s mind can change the lifestyle of that person. These 5 factors do not discriminate the person’s economic status, social status, educational background, regional factor s or linguistic preferences. They are all pervasive and they can enter any mind which welcomes them. These 5 enemies can impact the employability of the candidates.
1.      Poor Sense of Self: A person does not know about self. One should discover the self/identity, enhance the self worth and promote self confidence. There are live examples of people who have done a great job and achieved milestones in professional life in spite of being underperformers in their student life. The reason behind such success stories are nothing but self identity, self confidence and ability to sell self.
2.      Anxiety: An outcome poor sense of self. Self confidence is the only medicine for anxiety. A little practice of facing new faces in the society can add value to the fight against anxiety.
3.      Embarrassment: No person is perfect. Every person tries to be least imperfect. In this pursuit mistakes do happen and embarrassments embrace. Treat them like cover pages of biography.
4.      Ignorance: Ignorance is bliss but not always. One cannot escape from mistakes and embarrassments in the backdrop of ignorance. Keep the doors open for knowledge. Learn from mistakes. Do not deny the mistakes of self and do not accept the mistakes of others.
5.      Denial: Learn the art of saying NO. A generic tendency is that when boss asks something always say YES. But the fact is that the say YES only when you mean YES and live up to it. Learn the art of denial. Be positive to be negative.
The Soft Skills play a vital role when a person is almost done with his/her higher education. It is seen that many a times Higher Education is done for the sake of doing it not with an aim or a goal. There are 4 stages when a person is confused of his/her next stage of life. First stage is end of Secondary Education, Second Stage is Pre-University, Third stage is end of Graduation and lastly choosing the job. First two stages are generally decided by the parents in India. When a person is at the stage of completing the graduation the confusion arises – should he/she find a job that can earn a 5-digit salary or go for higher studies. Many a times, these decisions are made under peer pressure.
But, when the person is out of higher education there’s no one who can influence his/her thought. Meanwhile, the person is so confused to decide where to go. It is quite important that the goal setting is done for the graduates whilst they enter the final year of the graduation. It becomes quite important for the teachers to understand the capability and interest of each student when they help them in goal setting. Soft Skills that are innate in the student influence the way the goals are being set.
The failures of Indian Universities are highlighted at universal level not because of the curriculum they are following but due to the lack of industry standards in the graduates coming out of the universities.
Every educational institute has a HRD cell with an intension to make the students employable. But, such cells seem to be inactive and inefficient for various reasons.
  • -          Inability to take time out of the curriculum.
  • -          Lack of interest among the students.
  • -          Any efforts of training are considered to be an additional burden.

There have been several efforts in enhancing the level of employability of the graduates by the Governments and the companies. Infosys introduced Campus Connect in the 2007 for engineering graduates and Project Genesis for the graduates in general studies in 2005. The idea here was to train the students in last 6 months of their graduation and have them employable by the end of the year. This would help the company have industry ready resources.
Similarly, the Department of Collegiate Education, Karnataka, introduced a scheme for the second year students of Government First Grade Colleges to enable the students develop a positive self image, communication and interpersonal skills, stress management skills and social behavior.
Despite of these efforts if we are lagging behind in producing quality man power, then we will have to go back to elementary and secondary education system where we can mould the child into a thinker and instill soft skills in it.

AN ANALYSIS OVER IPL Season 4 – Part II

4. Rajasthan Royals

The princely state which turned the table around and won the first IPL title under the leadership of Shane Warne, with the big names in the team like Sohail Tanvir and Shane Watson followed by the Indian talents, Yusuf Pathan, Swapnil Anodikar and Ravindra Jadeja.

However, the euphoria of that first title-win died with the team failing to reach the Semi-Finals in 2009 and 2010. Rajasthan Royals retained only Shane Warne and Shane Watson before the 2011 IPL Auction and in the auction they bagged the Wall – Rahul Dravid, Ross Taylor, Shaun Tait and Johan Botha. They have a young Ranaji Trophy stars in the squad namely, Pankaj Singh, Akash Chopra, Ashok Menaria and Deepak Chahar.

If they look at what they have lost is very minimal when compared to what they have gained after the Auction. They may not have Naman Ojha and Greame Smith opening their batting this time but they have Shane Watson to open the innings with may be Swapnil Asnodikar or Aakash Chopra. They have the best of the middle order batsmen of the world Mr. Dependable Rahul Dravid and Sensible explosive Ross Taylor and local boys Anjikya Rahane, Ashok Menaria, Stuart Binny (S/O Roger Binny) from Karnataka, and experienced all rounders like Johan Botha, Jacob Oram. With so many promising all rounders in the team bowling attack would not be a issue for the Royals lead by Pankaj Singh and Shaun Tait with Shane Watson, Oram for support in pace department and spin attack lead by the magician Shane Warne, Johan Botha and Ashok Menaria. It’s time to wait and watch if the Royal’s crown will be earned back after 3 years.

5. Deccan Chargers

After a disastrous beginning to their journey in IPL by placing themselves at the bottom of the table, they turned the table around to win the second IPL title. In 2010 they continued their Champion performance till they lost to CSK in the semi-finals. The big names that we had in the team were RP Singh, Rohit Sharma, Pragyan Ojha, Adam Gilchrist and Andrew Symonds.

Before the IPL Auction 2011 DC went for complete overhaul and made some expensive and worthy buy of foreign players – Dale Steyn, Cameron White and Kevin Peiterson from RCB; JP Duminy from MI and Kumara Sangakkara from KXIP and some young Indian faces – Ishant Sharma, Amit Mishra and Shikhar Dhawan. They also bought back Pragyan Ojha, one of the prolific bowling performance of IPL who has already 50 wickets in his IPL kitty.

What they are going to miss in this season? Adam Gilchrist, the wicket keeper captain and explosive opener whom the team would have missed to great extent has been replaced by Kumar Sangakkara, the wicket keeper captain and explosive opener. The middle order that had Andrew Symonds and Rohit Sharma will now be supported by JP Duminy, KP, and Cameron White. They have gained a lot in terms of bowling attack when compared to their previous team with Dale Steyn leading the attack with Ishant Sharma and supported by Pragyan Ojha, Amit Mishra and MS Gony.

6. Delhi Daredevils

The only team to reach Semi Finals in all the 3 versions of IPL, had the best of the match winning players but failed to reach the finals and win the title for Delhi. The depth of batting line up headed by Viru, Gambhir, Dilshan, ABD, Dinesh Karthik and Paul Collingwood and top notch bowling attack lead by leged Glenn McGrath, Dirk Nannes and Daniel Vettori surprisingly did not help the team reach the finals.

Before the IPL Player Auction 2011, went for a complete rebuilding of team retaining only Viru. None of the players mentioned above returned to the squad, but they made some impressive and expensive buys. Irfan Pathan, Morne Morkel, David Warner, RE van der Merwe and Umesh Yaadav.

Looking at the overall team the team has got some new talents which can turn the results unexpectedly throughout the season. The openers Viru and Naman Ojha (RR) have got good records in the shortest version of International Cricket. The middle order supported by David Warner, Venugopal Rao and Irfan Pathan, Colin Ingram and van der Merwe. Other than Morne Morkel none of the bowlers have shown any significant bowling attack, however, new ball bowler Ajit Agarkar and Irfan Pathan cannot be rated low. They do have their charm still left in them and they can add some runs to the board making their tail stronger. They also have enough support from Venu Gopal Rao and van der Merwe in the spin department who can bowl some decent spells. And some surprise packages are guaranteed with young players coming into picture. Can this team full of talent but not with much experience win their first title or rank at the bottom of the table? Only time can answer this question but fun filled thrill is guaranteed with this team.

We shall have a glance at Kings XI Punjab, Kolkata Knight Riders who have not made much impact in the IPL other than their jersey in last 3 seasons and the new teams – Pune Warriors India and Kochi Tuskers Kerala tomorrow.

AN ANALYSIS OVER IPL Season 4 – Part I

After successful journey with ICC World Cup 2011, the entire nation is ready to face another Cricket festival, Indian Premier League 4. Unlike, the last 2 seasons of IPL, this season is going to be more interesting with the inclusion of 2 new teams to the league, Kochi Tuskers Kerala and Pune Warriors India. Also, the 2011 auctions gave an opportunity to the Stake holders to rebuild or reengineer their respective teams. We saw major transfers between the teams and inclusion of new talents into the teams which has resulted no favorites or all favorites for the title. This is an effort to give you an overview on IPL 4.

Starting with the Defending Champions Chennai Super Kings –

1. Chennai Super Kings

The India’s most successful captain, second Captain to get World Cup to India and only Wicket Keeper-captain of world cricket to complete 100 matches as captain – Mahendra Singh Dhoni is one of the key players that CSK retained the services ahead of the IPL auction 2011, along with Murali Vijay, Suresha Raina, and Albei Morkel. However, not only they managed to get the other key players whom they had auctioned, like Badrinath, Ashwin, Doug Bollinger and Mike Hussey but also managed to get some new inspirational picks like Dwayne Bravo and Faf du Plessis. They also have youngsters on their side Yo Mahesh and Anirudh Srikkanth. They are full of Strengths and Opportunities, but not to forget that they do not have Muralidaran on their side now, which is the only loss they have undergone which is not going to matter with new talents coming in same team being played as IPL 3.

2. Royal Challengers Bangalore

My favorite team, the Royals have played their best in the last 2 editions after a disastrous 2nd place from last in the first season of IPL. This time other than Virat Kohli and Anil Kumble they kept all the players for auction and bought no one back. Anil Kumble, after been chosen as President of Karnataka State Cricket Association, he retired from IPL as a player and joined RCB as Asst. Coach with Ray Jennings. But, during the auctions, RCB found some veteran and T20 Specialists like Dilshan, De Villiers and Dirk Nannes from Delhi, Saurabh Tiwary and Zaheer Khan from Mumbai. Under the captaincy of Daniel Vettori, openers like Dilshan and ABD, followed by Kohli, Tiwary and Pujara, with their left arm top notch pace bowling attack by Dirk Nannes and Zaheer, supported by captain Vettori and young Mithun.

What they are missing is undisputed Mr. Dependable Wall and Jacques Kallis. They are also going to miss the young talents like Manish Pandey and Robin Uttappa. Most importantly the on-field leader Kumble though he will be there in the dressing room along with Ray Jennings and Venkatesh Prasad. They also have young emerging talents like CM Gautam and Abrar Kaazi which is a proving ground for them. The only question they got to answer is “Can the 2 time Semi Finalist RCB win the Title this time?”

3. Mumbai Indians

Though they have lost their best of the All Rounders like Bravo, Tiwary during the auction, they found some promising veteran support into the team with Andrew Symonds, Kieron Pollard, Malinga and Bhajji joining the team lead by the Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar.

They have the Stars in their team; however, they have to overcome certain threats which can be turned into opportunities. The one big concern which Sachin is the only best person handle is the old “famous” fight of Symmo and Bhajji which might affect the team. Another concern around performance would be again Bhajji and Munaf, Bhajji being wicket less and Munaf’s death over bowling. They have a got Top and Top Middle order, but I do not see much of strength in the tail in case there is a unexpected collapse of batting order.

But, the most effective weapon they have which will impact the opponents psychology by at least 10% is the master Sachin Tendulkar.

Tomorrow, we will have a look at the Rajasthan Royals (Winners of IPL 1), Deccan Chargers (Winners of IPL 2) and Delhi Daredevils (3 Time Semi Finalists).

Guru - The Teacher

In the traditional Gurukula way of teaching or modern way of teaching, the teacher has always held a respected and an important position in the students’ life.

To define knowledge in conservative way - To attain and gain knowledge the only means one can find is the “Guru” or teacher. Where a person possesses the wealth of knowledge and is generous enough to share that wealth with the society, the place becomes a Gurukula on its own. A person with penchant for knowledge has to reside at the feet of Guru and gain knowledge. He should have the courtesy to stretch his arms in front of the Guru for knowledge. One has to submit himself to the Guru for knowledge. Purandara Dasa (one of the leads in Dasa Sahitya) has said – “You have to be a slave of your Guru to attain salvation” (ಗುರುವಿನ ಗುಲಾಮನಾಗುವ ತನಕ ದೊರೆಯದಣ್ಣ ಮುಕುತಿ).

Shishunala Shareef Saheb, one of the Sufi Saints from Karnataka, says, “There are 2 kinds of Gurus in our life. The first Guru is materialistic and the other is spiritual Guru. The teaching you get from first is – if you subtract 3 by 9 the answer is 6 and according to the latter say it’s 0.”

The gist is very simple and interesting. Kama (fleshliness), Krodha (Anger), Mada (Pride), Matsara (Jealous), Moha (Fascination) and Lobha (Greed) which are called Ari-Shadwarga or 6 enemies of human. And these 3 are an outcome of 3 materialistic things – Woman, Money and Wealth. Out of these 9 if we beat the latter 3 the remaining 6 would disappear from our life on their own.

That said, the Spiritual Guru would help you build the divine spirits of Love, patience, forgiveness, dedication to work, being altruistic to lead a happy and peaceful life.

Next to Parents, it’s the Guru who has the most important and respectable place in everyone’s life. Once a child is born, it’s the duty of the parents to take care of that Kid till it grows up to youth. But, a major responsibility would lie on Guru’s shoulder to make that young bud into respectful, responsible citizen of the World.

गुरुब्रह्म गुरुर्विष्णो गुरुर्देवो महेश्वरा

गुरु साक्षात परब्रह्म तस्मैश्री गुरुवे नमः

Guru is considered as representative of the Trimurtis, namely, Brahma (The Creator), Vishnu (The Caretaker) and Shiva (the Destructor) – creates Divine Thoughts in the minds of his students, takes care of his students and ensures that they take the right way of living life, and destructs the ignorance, bad habits and thoughts from Students mind and ensures that his student is a gift to his State, Country or to the World.

आनो भद्राः कृतवोयन्तु विश्वतः”– which means we should let the superior thoughts to flow from all around the World. We should have broad and open mind to inherit the knowledge from any person, from any corner of this world at any point of time. Adi Shanakaracharya says – “It does not matter if the person who has knowledge is a Brahman or chandal. He becomes a guru only if he has the will to share it and you have the will to earn it.”

In the Vedic period, the Guru used to pray आनो ब्रह्मचरिभ्य स्वाहा॥ - where they pray to the God to send good students to him to share his knowledge. They would feel proud if the Shishya (Student) is able to challenge the Guru and beat him in the challenge (शिष्याद इच्छेत् पराजयं )

If you have the eyes to see it, the entire world and the nature we live in themselves are the biggest Gurus. You learn almost or everything from the Mother Nature. The Mountains teach us stability; the Mother Earth – Patience; from the Sun, the Stars, the rivers, the Cow (गोमाता) and the trees, we learn benevolence; Sobriety from the Oceans; Ants teach us the art of Savings and unity; loyalty and satiety from the Dog – In this manner we learn the values of human life from animate and inanimate things around us. In this regard the world is a huge University with infinite amount of knowledge in it and the nature is an ideal of all Gurus. Next to nature the Books are the greatest Guru for anyone who admits it.

On the occasion of Teacher’s Day – I would like to dedicate this article to all the teachers of India who has shouldered the responsibility of building the future of a vibrant and glorious country. This is a tribute to your great work and my sincere thanks to you all.

Hindutwa - True Secularism

Secularism! What a fabulous word in Indian Democracy!! But, when you ask someone what it means, most of would answer Secularism is being neutral in terms of religion. But does that explain the basics of Secularism?

In my school days I had learnt in the books of History and Civics which said – Secularism is tolerance, and respect towards other religion and people following particular religion. Secularism is something which India has been following from the Vedic period. There has been a saying that India believes from ages – “Vasudeva Kutumbakam”, which means the world is a family.
The name “India” was inherited from the word “Sindhu” one of the sacred epic river. People from this part of the world were called “Hindus”. Gradually, the Greeks, the Mongolians, the Mughals and many of the foreign invaders entered India and set their base in India. They also bought religious leaders into the country, who introduced Islam to the Indian soil. Many weaker section of the country got converted to the Islam and followed the preaching of Mohammed Paigambar.

The era of East India Companies started with the entry of Portuguese, French, Dutch and the British. In the course of time the Companies tried to set a monopoly in the market. Then, they discovered the invaluable wealth that India has and fell in the greed to conquer it. Gradually, they started conquering the small states that prevailed in India and finally became the Kings of India. As always, Darwin’s Theory – “Survival of the Fittest” showed its existence again. The British became the undisputed Kings of the Great India (Other than small parts of India like Pondicherry which remained in the hands of French and Goa in the hands of Portuguese) – Thanks to our impotent rulers of that era. Gradually, the Christian Missionaries stated flowing into the country and started their preaching by Jesus.

The 2 paragraphs above show how we respected and entertained other religions which were not originated from India (though there are different schools of thought who still believe Christianity and Islam are one and the same, Christianity is another version of Buddhism – but none have got a solid proof yet). India adhered to the belief it had on “Vasudeva Kutumbakam”, currently known as Secularism. It is also called “Dharma Sahishnu” which means tolerance towards other Dharma or Religion.

But, what is Secularism today? Where it stands in India today? It has just become a game plan to create Vote Banks for most of the Political Parties to win the race of General Elections. A country which had driven the thought of “The World is a Family” is not able to make itself a family. People are fighting on the grounds of religion, caste, creed and what not.
What is the reason for this? The Christian Missionaries and the Masjids who are frequently trying to attack the ancient Hinduism, if not physically but playing mind games. Secularism says tolerance to other religion. But the Christian and Muslim leaders are not tolerating the existence of Hinduism and trying to convert people to their religion and they as well as the people who support them are called the Seculars. Any effort to stop this or protest this is called communalism. The organization like VHP, Bajarangadal and organizations which support these like RSS and BJP are called communalists. These organizations are just trying safeguard and correct mishaps that have happened in the past.

The day people understand this truth the Secularism finds its true meaning. Our nation can progress to the level it deserves. It’s time for every rational citizen to decide what is right and what is wrong. The Secularism should be the key to unity and not divide and rule. People who have read and understood the Indian History in the right sense will know the consequences of Divide and Rule policy of the rulers. Dear Indian, wake up and give the call of unity and support the person (physical or virtual) who aims for Unified India, Vibrant India, Glorious India!!!
